Restart Bibliotherapy

A new scalable approach to bibliotherapy

What is bibliotherapy? Something with books, right?

That's a good question! There is not one definition of bibliotherapy. Different groups describe this term in a different way. What everyone agrees on is that specific books can have some therapeutic effect in specific situations. Some see this as a form of reflection or (self)therapy, while others see this as a specific part of treatment within mental health care. Some think that this only applies to non-fiction, while others think that it mainly applies to fiction. Still others extend this to poems, graphic novels and even other media forms. In short: it is currently a very broad definition.

Why a restart?

Many young adults, but also children and adults, are currently struggling with their mental health. In the latest research by CBS, Trimbos and other institutes, it seems as if millions of people in the Netherlands are not feeling well. Perhaps a certain book does not pull people out of their darkest valley, but perhaps it does give them a 'push' in the right direction.

MADE-Life sees a lot of potential in bibliotherapy, but of course you first have to be able to find the right book for the right situation. Our goal is therefore to put together an ecosystem of stakeholders to breathe new life into bibliotherapy together. This ecosystem extends from the supply side (publishers, libraries, search systems, related foundations, etc.) to the demand side (readers, schools, (patient) associations, mental health care, etc.)

The mini-conference on March 3, in combination with our ongoing challenge 'Story for the Future', is a first step to get the flywheel moving. Together, because we see this event as a form of co-creation - the best way to jointly establish a good foundation.
